We have been working lately on Dentem 2.0 and one of the promises of our second version of the platform is that it will have Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning APIs) built in.
Based on our experience and knowledge our team is building better systems and one of those will be leveraging DX Vision API to auto populate tooth charting.
We are changing the way we do things on the back end to have build a few models rather than just one monolithic model that will do everything.
This is one of the many ways our Ai research and machine learning algorithms will affect dentistry and this pattern will continue across all our application functionalities.

We at Dentem are super exited about what NVIDIA AI is bringing into the market. The new RTX line of graphics cards and the new ‘Turing’ architecture. This will push the whole industry forward. With machine learning revolutionizing every industry one by one. We love the new improved speeds of the ‘Ray Tracing’ and we believe that gaming and movies will never look the same after the announcements.
But that is not why we are exited!
The biggest revolution by far is the ‘Tensor Core’ in the new architecture that serves machine learning models. The fascinating thing is that Nvidia improved ray tracing times up to 25x using a machine learning model. Jumping to their other project. Nvidia — Project Clara. The super computer for medical imaging.
It resembles one of our project, ‘Dx Vision,’ with the promise of bringing new life into medical images. They are driving the industry to the next revolution that its dubbed as the fourth industrial revolution. Machine learning models are going to be changing every industry in the near future as the speed of change is unbelievable.
This is just a glimpse of the future. Dx Vision will bring many more exiting changes and literally breathe new life into old images and imaging devices.

While computer vision is evolving we still have some obstacles to overcome. When it comes to an object detection algorithm based on the data that you input in the training, you can train a machine to detect objects in a sandbox environment. Where the input that the computer can read is always the same. Out of that controlled environment the computer might fail to be precise or work as intended.
While computer vision is modeled after the human’s ability to see and differentiate objects, it has its flaws. Our vision and perception is still far greater that what the current generation of machines are able to understand and analyze. It has multiple layers of predictions, detection and a much larger knowledge that can expand in specific cases (medical imaging).
That is why here at Dentem, with Dx Vision we are modeling a multi layered prediction and detection computer vision for dental images. That will allow the technology to evolve and grow and work as intended outside of a sandbox environment.
To further simplify it if we as researchers build a multi layered prediction and detection models. We can make a computer understand much more deeply and precisely what it is looking at and have better analytical outcome.
In our simple testing we trained a model to predict the dental image category simplified for testing:
1)panoramic
2)bitewing
3)other
The results as bellow:
1st image: 99.9% accurate that it is a panoramic (bigger dataset)
2nd image: 98.8% accurate that it is a bitewing
3rd image: 90.8% accurate that it is not a dental radiograph.
After the category is determined than the computer goes ahead and runs the specific trained models to detect objects within that category.
Now imagine for a second. A multi layered prediction and detection system that is within a hospital (or in the cloud). This gives a knowledge graph to a machine to detect a diversified array of medical images from chest x-rays, to CT scans and run different models regarding the images to try and assist the doctor to analyse the image spending far less time and with just one press of a button.
The system determines the kind of image that it has to analyse -> Specifies a category -> runs the specific model based on category -> gives our the result.
This will become a reality very soon when the future imaging machines will have a build it knowledge graph or they will be connected to a cloud service that will deliver the data and get back the results so it makes the process far less time consuming.
This is why at Dentem we packed Dx Vision into an API that will enable all third parties to send images to predict, detect and analyse and return the results seamlessly into the system. An infrastructure with multi layered models trained after specific set of rules.
The testing of this API has begun and already a couple of companies from different industries are testing and willing to test the APi and include it later into their infrastructure to improve their processes.
Bonus: Now Dx vision model run inside a web browser via tfjs or inside a mobile application that is not connected to the internet. Those models are simplified and might produce less accurate results. But looking at the speed of change we believe that the future will revolutionize the way we approach healthcare and dental healthcare.

New labels will be added in the specs of this new model as it is still under development. We will go further to analyse a lot more content from the dental X-Ray.

The future will be much different that what it is now. We have seen a few revolutions throughout our lifespan. The speed of the Internet has changed the world by introducing real time connectivity. However, there is also a fundamental evolution in the way we input information. How we communicate with our devices. It started by inputting long and complex commands through a keyboard layout styled after typewriters. Then continued through GUI introduction, and then with the famous touchscreen and mobile devices together with the connectivity of the Internet revolutionized the way we use technology daily.
The future looks even brighter. Our voice is becoming more and more a mainstream input and is changing how we use our devices and how we communicate. We also have the evolution of machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence layers that are built on top of all the data spread across devices and platforms. We at Dentem are contributing to the future with our research projects.
That is where we see our platform contributing to the change of how dental practices are managed and how software enables doctors and staff to achieve more while increasing effectiveness and efficiency. In 10 years from now, we will communicate with our devices primarily with our voice and in a more natural way. To the extent that technology may understand us fluently. The platform will not only analyze data but also give us second opinions on what procedures should be done and in what order so the treatment for the patient is always on point. The dental chair will not be just a chair with an Internet accessible computer or local database but rather a real virtual assistant to the provider of healthcare. It will be a central hub generating and retrieving new valuable information from a patient and directly analyzing the results from the moment a client needs a treatment. Smart delivery of care, not just a standard 6 month reminder to check up on clients but more customized care based on patients genetic data that determines if a patient either has stronger teeth or teeth that are more prone to a specific problem or periodontal problems like plaque.
To the extent that once the patient sits on the dental chair a full 3D scan is made and procedures needed are automatically suggested. Afterwards, the doctor may wear smart glasses and preview a real-time bone structure of the patients skull and teeth so they know all the details for an extraction. Also, technologies that automatically calculate where braces should be placed and how much pressure should be applied to achieve the best results according to the bone density and age of the patient. All of this may be done without even touching a keyboard or mouse.
The future might look scary for some, but bright and exiting for us here at Dentem. And, we want to help build this future.
